How Do I Get a Domain Name?

To buy a domain name all you need to do is go to a domain registrar and search for a domain name.  Once you find the web address you want to purchase, check it off and proceed to the checkout.  Most domain registrars let you pay by either credit card or paypal.  You can also pay by check at some domain registrar websites.

Once you purchase a URL, you can then login to your account and navigate through your domain manager.  You can then change options and settings on your domain name, the most important of which are your DNS servers.  Your DNS servers will look like NS1.websitename.com and NS2.websitename.com.  You will change these to your webhosting DNS servers so you can host your website under your domain name.

Should I Get a .com or a .net Domain Name?

If you’re ready to buy a website name, you may discover that finding the web address you want to purchase isn’t as easy as you thought.  Your great domain name idea in the .com domain extension may be long gone.  However, you do see the .net extension is available.

Is it ok to buy a .net domain name for my business?

Yes, .net works for your domain business.  Although the power of the industry standard .com isn’t there, many have found that there isn’t a significant loss in traffic from those going to the .com domain.  If you’re worried about the effect on search engines, .net and .com are valued equally (or at least so close one could not tell the difference).

The problem you will have with a .net vs. .com is once you do develop the .net domain into a website, negotiating the price of a .com will go up as the .com owner knows there is at least one person who would really be interested in the .com version of that website name.

If you plan on operating on a large, public scale, I recommend buying the .com right off the bat as it saves on marketing dollars.  This means none of your money is spilled onto the .com website for free.  For example, say you own DomainName.net and market it and advertise it with tens of thousands of dollars, $50k to be exact.  Probably $1,000 to $2,000 will leak onto the .com site.  If the .com is well developed, this will act the same as you handing business to your competitor.

Some people will naturally revert to .com unless you impress your name and brainwash them into seeing your DomainName.net brand when they enter the name into the URL.  There will be a small percentage who hear your name on a radio ad or through word of mouth and will remember, oh yeah I’m supposed to go to Domain Name something.  Probably Domain Name .com.

Of course, you have to offset this with any costs you save as a result of not buying a .com.  If you’re a small business and are set on a particular name, .net is a website name extension that will work just fine for you.  If you’re operating on a large scale – big business – you need the .com.

.com domains will always get more credibility.

.net designates network and .com represents commercial but for all practical purposes, they are the same.
